Airwindows is one guy: me! I am an audio hacker and computer programmer from way back. I seek only to continue my life up here in Vermont, inventing things and putting them onto the internet, sometimes for free and sometimes for pay. My hope is that people richer than me (i.e. most people) don't rob me. My other hope is for another cup of Aeropress. One out of two ain't bad!

Mudslide was designed as a demo for the plugin DubSub. It’s a faceless, control-less bass guitar plugin designed to celebrate the magic of the mighty P-bass! I was going for an ideal thick, solid, articulate yet totally dull bass tone for driving a track from the backline, for free because you don’t get to tweak the […]

DubSubDemo is all things subsonic and bass! It can generate dubstep style sub-basses, fill in the bottom octave, octave-divide, synthesize house kicks from raw materials, and it defaults to a nice SansAmp-style bass tone! Signal flow goes from top to bottom, so get sounds by starting with the grind and bass sections. The subs section (octave […]

SubsOnly is a utility plugin to use with Voxengo SPAN, in Density Mode. That will give you the best ‘VU style’, sense-the-loudness-of-the-track, metering, and when you put one of these utilities in front of SPAN, it’s calibrated so equal levels will give you appropriate amounts of extreme subs. If the levels are out of whack, your balances […]

ElectricBass is a cheap P-bass copy, played with fingers, most notes on the fretboard sampled, sustained long enough to play longish notes. There’s no velocity multi-sampling and it’s only eight megs or so in size. The point was to make a downloadable EXS24 sampler instrument so people buying my drum sample instruments could try something out […]

Floor is all about bass guitar and kick drums—you can sculpt and tighten the lows in a very useful way, and/or throw in midrange impact. It works kind of like Density/Drive, but when used to control subsonics the wet channel suggests more lows. That’s by design: it’s one of the ‘simulate added bass’ plugins like MaxxBass […]

BassKitDemo is a precursor to DubSub, with some obscure features all its own. It’s set up more like a full-mix sub-octave synthesizer, and doesn’t have the bass-amp type features DubSub has. Dry/Wet is at the top because it’s not overall: it runs as part of the balance but the sub-octave and ‘floor’ stuff goes after it. […]

FlatBass was part of my early experiments with drum samples. It’s not a drum instrument, it’s a sort of bass, obviously. The idea was, I sold the drum sampler instruments outright, but you’d download the free FlatBass and get it to work in your DAW. If you could make that work, then you would probably be […]

DeHiss has just one control, Threshold. Sounds below this threshold will be de-hissed. It’s not like a simple EQ: the algorithm’s doing freaky things relating to the mean level of samples, but for all practical purposes it acts like a gate that can clamp down brutally on high-frequency noise. The plugin was designed to cope with […]

FathomFive was part of the evolution that led to DubSub, through BassKit and all manner of related plugins. A great deal of this development had to do with taming the low frequency boost: it’s an algorithm that also does work as the head bump for ToTape, and it’s very difficult to manage. Specifically, it delights […]

AcousticBass is one of the early Airwindows convolution plugins. It’s programmed similarly to CabSVT, which is to say oddly but if you like the sound it’s all good. Part of it was to try and get a convolution impulse done through raw multiplies like a giant FIR filter, but in such a way that the computers […]
