Chris

Hi! I've got a new plugin you can have! These plugins come in Mac AU, and Mac, Windows and Linux VST. They are state of the art sound, have no DRM, and have totally minimal generic interface so you focus on your sounds.

DitherTo

DitherTo exists because dither’s not exactly a huge market segment, yet it’s important to getting digital tone with depth and spatiality. For that reason, I’ve picked two dithers out of what’s shipped with Ditherbox, and you can have top-quality boutique dither for free. You just can’t select whichever one you like, or switch to monitoring modes like Silhouette or SubsOnly, as you can with Ditherbox. But the actual dither is the same quality as the professional grade plugin.

DitherTo16 uses Vinyl dither. It stores up error energy and releases it in tiny sputters, like vinyl surface noise. This dither/noise shaping gets a nice rich sound out of CD-quality audio.

DitherTo24 uses Contingent dither, which gets a detailed, finely textured sound. It’s at such a low level that you’re certainly not going to be able to hear it consistently, but all the same dithering is the correct thing to do when exporting to a fixed point format. So, there’s a 24 bit option, because that’s correct. You may feel that you can pick up on subtle improvements exporting through this, even monitoring at 24 bit through this: depends on how sensitive you are to things way below the threshold of consistent observation.

Both are free, so if you’d like to try monitoring through boutique dither at 24 bit nothing’s stopping you :)

DigitalBlack

DigitalBlack is something special from Airwindows: a variable-attack gate. It’s free. Here’s how it works.

When signal is going through above the threshold, a special sensor’s being triggered. It’s keeping track of the longest wavelengths of signal, and that determines the ‘crest factor’ over the gate. When signal drops, the gate waits for that crest factor to run out, then begins to fade out the signal in the same way the original Airwindows Gate did: making it seem to fall back, not just go quieter.

The result is a simple one-knob gate that responds to the speed of waveforms going through it. If you’re hitting it with a lot of treble, it can close more crisply. If there’s bass, the gate will be more cautious about cutting off the lows, and it’ll close more gently.

It defaults to a value that will silence a 16 bit noisefloor, in case you’re trying to make CDs that go to literally digital black. However, it ought to work as well for things like heavy guitar gating. Hope you like it!

StereoDoubler

StereoDoubler is a tricky little plugin that’s just a little glitchy and insane.

What it does, is detune the input it’s given, so it can make one detuned copy hard right, and one hard left. There’s a dry/wet control to mix this with the input, which can be dual mono or whatever else you like (probably a mono track panned center makes the best sense)

Thing is, the technology it’s using to do this… comes from Glitch Shifter.

If you keep the detune from being too extreme, you can probably get a lovely wide spread that has real richness of tone. But if you push the detune too far, you will get pops or sputters, no question about it. So detune wisely.

Or, heck, if you want to get really seasick, go ahead and crank the detune. We all gotta have fun where we find it ;)

StereoDoubler declares one sample of latency.

Doubler

Doubler is just what it says: another early Airwindows pitch-shifter freebie. It’s more in the chorus vein than the harmonizer vein, but as it’s a freebie that can be forgiven. Happy doubling! This is an N to N plugin, meaning that it works in mono and runs dual-mono when put on a stereo track.
