Chris

Hi! I've got a new plugin you can have! These plugins come in Mac AU, and Mac, Windows and Linux VST. They are state of the art sound, have no DRM, and have totally minimal generic interface so you focus on your sounds.

Crystal

Crystal was the colorless version of the Character plugs, Airwindows ‘Virtual Console Collection’ years before anyone else was doing it. The idea was, make a ‘colorless’ version with all the same functionality, so people could try it out.

The Character plugins grew into BussColors, which let you switch between them and is still around and popular. Back in the day, though, you picked between plugins like ‘Luxor’, ‘Neverland’ and ‘APIcolypse’. The plugins dynamically generated convolution impulses based on the signal coming in, which is true even of the ‘colorless’ Crystal: its convolution impulse is simply a filter for the highest supersonic frequencies, with no added color or character.

The Character plugins (and Crystal) also had a saturation effect briefly seen in Channel, where the output was flat up until you hit a certain point and then switched to a gradual saturation curve. You can shift between very gradual saturation or hard clipping or anything in between. Thing is, I learned that way that people don’t like discontinuities in the transfer function: this feature didn’t sound as good to people as a single smooth curve.

But you can experiment with it for free with Crystal. Crystal’s also got an interesting trick on its output stage: it’s applying a ditherlike noise, but rather than applying it as a value it’s applying a blend between the output sample and the previous output sample. This makes high frequency content soften and fuzz, without adding noise to low frequency stuff or to silence. It’s there in Crystal, subtly, so if that sounds interesting give it a try.

Elation

Elation is a curious thing: a compressor that doesn’t actually compress! Well, not much.

The intention was to use LA-2A impulses, like I used to make many Character plugs, to produce a LA-2A emulation. What happened? Dunno. Maybe I’m just not familiar enough with the thing to recognize whether it worked? Elation does do a good job of softening textures. The personality slider can be pushed very far in the ‘color’ direction. The drive slider will give you your ‘compression’ or push right past it into distortedness. If you balance these things out, you can get a compress-y output: I just don’t have the confidence in this that I do in, say, Logical.

So, it’s free. Enjoy the striking new texture, and if it’s better than I knew as a LA-2A emulation, let me know because I won’t take it back once it’s a freebie. Hope it serves some purposes. It does sound nice and round, maybe that’s enough :)

Logical

LogicalDemo was one of the plugins from the Character collection, but it was never included with them because (like Elation) it had special behavior, namely compression. From the word go, Logical was setting out to be a 2-buss compressor.

Controls were similar to the Character plugs, including a Personality control which handled the application of a convolution impulse. Like the other Character plugins, this wasn’t just an impulse (from SSL gear) but a dynamic extrapolation from two impulses at very different gain levels.

You should be using the most current Logical, it’s much better as a compressor. But, if you want a copy of the first Logical, buy the current one and then ask me in email. I’ll send you one.

Flutter

Flutter includes mono and stereo versions. It’s a great-sounding tape flutter effect that can be fairly intense, but there’s a problem: because of the design of the algorithm, I never got this version to have correct delay compensation. It does declare tons of latency, but it can’t lock on to the correct delay. It declares a whopping 32760 samples of latency and still doesn’t line up correctly with other tracks!

As a result, this will throw off the timing of any track it’s on, and it’s tough to dial in using delays and things. Therefore, I’ve put out these plugins for free, as is. Might be useful in sound design, or on tracks where the timing doesn’t matter. Don’t track with it engaged, because of the latency it declares!
